Premier Red Angus
Beef
Industry Today
-
The
main ingredient needed to excel in
the beef industry today is fertility and
functional ability. The
interest and
demand for Red Angus
cattle is the
highest in the industry because of their carcass quality, maternal
characteristics, calving ease, and moderate size that ideally suits
today’s beef industry. Their red coat color is especially
heat tolerant and well suited for warmer climates. Because of their thorough and
strict registration process, the
Red
Angus Association (RAA)
can effectively and truthfully
describe and predict the three general areas of reproduction, growth
and carcass using as few EPDs as possible.

Red Angus
Association Total Herd Reporting (THR). In July 1995, the
Red Angus Association implemented THR. Having been a group
that always required performance records, theis was just another
step in that direction. There was a growing need to
collect performance data on ALL calves, not just those intended
for registration. So instead of the structure fee being
focused on the calf registration, Red Angus structures it on the
cow. Therefore to keep the cow in the herd, you have to
report her production for that year. There are codes for
twins, ET program (both as a donor or recip cow), open, switched
breeding season, death of calf, and premature/aborts. For
more thorough details read the 2006 Red Angus Sire Summary.
